Makati as well as being the Philippines seventh largest city is also where majority of the country’s financial and commercial activities take place. Makati hotels abound in this great area of Metro Manila that you will never complain from lack of room supply.
The name for the city actually derives from the Tagalog word for “tide” (Kati). However, when Spanish explorers arrived they asked what the places name was and misinterpreted what was said them.
When the natives were saying to them “Makati” the Spanish thought that this is what the city was called when in fact that they were explaining to them that the “tide was ebbing”. So as a result it was what many who came to this place thought it was called and this became the name it is known by now.
However, what is hard to believe that although it is now the center of all financial and commercial matters before the 1950′s this wasn’t the situation. Before this time the city was very much a swampland where earning a living was hard to come by.
Over the years this city has been the center of many major events that have taken place in the Philippines history. For example in the 1980′s following the assassination of Senator Ninoy Aquino it became the hub where those involved in protest movements against the then President of the country could be found.
If you are intending to visit Makati at any point in the future to learn more about its history there are certain times of year when you should be considering visiting. If you can to avoid the wet season you shouldn’t be considering visiting here between June and November. Instead if you want to enjoy some really wonderful sunshine but when it isn’t too hot then the best time to visit would between December and February. Unfortunately from March onwards the temperatures in the city can rise quite considerably in some cases they can reach up to 37 degrees Centigrade.
Although Makati is the center of the Philippines commercial and financial activities, there are plenty of affordable places to stay when visiting it. Yes this city does have most of the country’s 5 star hotels but there is plenty of cheaper hotels and even apartments available to rent. If you can opt for these as they will allow you to experience a different side of life in this very cosmopolitan and culturally diverse city.
Whilst you are visiting the city do take time out to explore many of its wonderful attractions and museums. Again these will allow you to get a real sense of this country and city’s history and how it has developed since the first Spanish explorers arrived and chose to make it their home.
Plus when you come to Makati you will find that because it needs to cater to the needs of travelers from around the globe it offers a wonderful array of different types of foods for you to try. Of course really no visit to this city would be complete without trying out some of the more local delicacies again there are plenty of restaurants you can visit.
